She is sure giving Sonam Kapoor a run for her fashionista money. There is not a single look here that I don't like.

Happy 5th Birthday VOGUE India. The covers are a bit lackluster though. Underwhelming is a much better word for it.

The last time I saw a Hermès Birkin in a Bollywood movie, it was being featured as an honorary prop/character (see “bagwati” the Birkin in Zoya Akhtar’s 2011 film ‘Zindagi na milegi dobara’) “bagwati” retailed at €12,000 in the film (approximately $15,000 USD or £10,000 GBP) eek! So imagine my surprise when director Karan Johar (My name is Khan, Kabhie Kushie Kabhie Gham) unveiled the first look for his upcoming film ‘Student of the Year’ last week and one of the main characters was shown sporting a Birkin as her school book bag. All I’m saying at this point is that this character (portrayed by 16-year-old newcomer Alia Bhatt) better be the daughter of a Sheik, oil tycoon or a shrewd businessperson in order to justify why a teenager would carry such an expensive accessory to her HIGH SCHOOL.

Besides their killer looks and stunning beauty? Both actresses have now been seen paying fashion tributes to iconic Hollywood characters from blockbuster films on the cover of international magazines. Rai-Bachchan did it first back in February 2011 when she graced the cover of Vogue India wearing a Natalie Portman in ‘Black Swan’ inspired Dior couture feathered blazer. Now Padukone (on the cover of GQ India August 2012) pays tribute to ‘Catwoman’ Anne Hathaway’s character from the Hollywood summer blockbuster ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ dressed in a skin-tight corseted leather suit complete with a jewel encrusted cat-eye mask.

While Rai-Bachchan is still on maternity leave following the birth of her first child in November of 2011, Padukone will next be seen in the movie ‘Race 2′ opposite John Abraham and her current hit film ‘Cocktail’ co-star Saif Ali-Khan.

WHO: Former model & Indian Actor Arjun Rampal
WHAT: L’Officiel Magazine
WHEN: July/August 2012
Fashionwidget’s Verdict: A few days ago I expressed the desire to see Indian actress Deepika Padukone cover the latest issue of among other fashion periodicals, l’officiel as part of the promotional junket for her new movie ‘cocktail’. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon super sexy actor Arjun Rampal on the latest cover of the magazine instead. I’ll take it, seeing as I love both entertainers & their style, it’s all the same love and I have to say Mr. Rampal is looking really stellar here in an all-black Gucci attire and a wrist watch by Omega. The actor will next be seen in the movie ‘Ishq in Paris’ (Love in Paris) with legendary French actress Isabelle Adjani and fellow Indian actress Preity Zinta.

Stylishly seen here on the cover of EYE (a section of the Indian Financial Express), former Indian supermodel turned actress Deepika Padukone is riding a tidal wave of popularity with the success of her recent films ‘desi boyz’ & the newly released ‘cocktail’ not to mention countless magazine covers that almost rival her days as a supermodel as well as numerous appearances promoting her brands. One such occasion was that of the world premiere of ‘cocktail’ in Mumbai last week where she debuted her newly curvy figure in a stunning 2012 bridal collection Sabyasachi saree. Previously in the week, she promoted the film wearing casual looks from Halston Heritage and Diesel, in all of which she looked on-trend and poised. See collages below for details on where to buy the looks.

She has just begun a whirlwind promotional tour for her upcoming film ‘Cocktail’ so we are guaranteed to see more fashion risk taking from the Bollywood showstopper. Preliminary reports are good. I have to say I wasn’t expecting to see her so elegantly decked out in a Sabyasachi Mukherjee lehenga saree on Sunday as she walked the red carpet at the Filmfare South Awards. The tie-dye skinny jean and tank top look seems in line with the fashion sense of her ‘Cocktail’ character (at least based on what I picked up from the trailers) and as we know actresses tend to dress up as their characters during the film’s promotion. She seemed to be back to being Deepika in a jumpsuit, black peep toe pumps and fuchsia clutch when she stepped out for more promotional duties with her co-stars Saif Ali-Khan (pictured) & Diana Penty (not pictured). What I like about her style is the fact that while she never seems to be trying so hard she never stops short of reminding us of her days as a supermodel with her choice of fashion statements.

Even as she graces the cover of Women’s Health India July/August 2012 gone is her usual high-octane style replaced with a more resort/beach carefree look in line with ‘Cocktail’ tentatively scheduled to hit theatres on July 13th. Yes, Ms. Padukone is in full ‘Cocktail’ promo mode and (while it may be asking for too much) I hope she lands the upcoming covers of L’Officiel and Hi! Blitz magazines just for the sake of glamour.

It’s not so much as a statement cover but Ms. Sharma does look pretty in a beige-ish pink sequins et sheer mini dress styled up with tousled locks, nude makeup and a simple black chain bag. Three hit films strong (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Band Baaja Baaraat & Ladies vs Vicky Bahl) with a film career that began in 2008, the former model discusses her upcoming film projects with ace directors Anurag Kashyap and Raju Hirani among others. The issue is available on international newsstands now or press/media representatives can request a digital copy at filmfare.com/magazine.
Side Note: The other headline on the cover quoting French-Indian actress Kalki Koechlin (wife of director Anurag Kashyap) as saying she cannot play Bengali village-girl is so hilarious. I don’t believe I need to read the magazine to figure out why she has said this and if you know what Ms. Koechlin looks like versus a Bengali village girl, you will be laughing at her statement too. I just love Kalki, she is one of my favourite new Indian actresses and a fabulous fashionista might I add. Nice to know she has such a healthy sense of humour and does not take herself too seriously. Hopefully, somebody will challenge her and cast her in this role she does not think she can do.

Open Note To Kalki Koechlin: Meryl Streep would never give such a quote! You can do it Kalki, don’t limit yourself. If Robert Downing Jr. could convincingly play an African-American in ‘Tropic Thunder’ without causing any racial uproar, certainly you can play a Bengali village girl. All you need is a tan and drop your Tamilian accent, the acting thing is already in the bag.

The wedding festivities have begun for actress Esha Deol, the daughter of legendary Bollywood actors Dharmendra Deol and Hema Malini. In many Indian traditions, wedding ceremonies and festivities can last up to a week. The bollywood bride showed up at her sangeet (festival of song and dance) draped in a golden orange lehenga choli (skirt and small blouse) designed by edgy designer and one of Fashionwidget’s favourites, Rocky S. Bharat Takhtani, her handsome husband-to-be is not from the film industry.
I have to admit, when I heard whispers that Deol was going to be wearing something by Rocky S, I was thrilled because it takes a really bold and gutsy girl to want to shy away from the traditional favourites like Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar, Neeta Lulla and Sabyasachee Mukherjee in favour of a designer known for his innovative yet often risqué designs. Let’s not ignore the fact that Ms. Deol’s main squeeze is a total hit in his navy blue velvet embroidered sherwani suit, the bride-to-be made sure to remind everybody who the original ‘Dhoom’ girl (akin to bond girl, in India) truly is by showing off her assets while remaining stylish and classy. To a truly stunning couple, best wishes.
