Mag Rack: What Do Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan Have in Common?

Besides their killer looks and stunning beauty? Both actresses have now been seen paying fashion tributes to iconic Hollywood characters from blockbuster films on the cover of international magazines. Rai-Bachchan did it first back in February 2011 when she graced the cover of Vogue India wearing a Natalie Portman in ‘Black Swan’ inspired Dior couture feathered blazer. Now Padukone (on the cover of GQ India August 2012) pays tribute to ‘Catwoman’ Anne Hathaway’s character from the Hollywood summer blockbuster ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ dressed in a skin-tight corseted leather suit complete with a jewel encrusted cat-eye mask.

While Rai-Bachchan is still on maternity leave following the birth of her first child in November of 2011, Padukone will next be seen in the movie ‘Race 2’ opposite John Abraham and her current hit film ‘Cocktail’ co-star Saif Ali-Khan.

Bollywood Fashion Update: Actress Deepika Padukone’s Style Tour Begins

She has just begun a whirlwind promotional tour for her upcoming film ‘Cocktail’ so we are guaranteed to see more fashion risk taking from the Bollywood showstopper. Preliminary reports are good. I have to say I wasn’t expecting to see her so elegantly decked out in a Sabyasachi Mukherjee lehenga saree on Sunday as she walked the red carpet at the Filmfare South Awards. The tie-dye skinny jean and tank top look seems in line with the fashion sense of her ‘Cocktail’ character (at least based on what I picked up from the trailers) and as we know actresses tend to dress up as their characters during the film’s promotion. She seemed to be back to being Deepika in a jumpsuit, black peep toe pumps and fuchsia clutch when she stepped out for more promotional duties with her co-stars Saif Ali-Khan (pictured) & Diana Penty (not pictured). What I like about her style is the fact that while she never seems to be trying so hard she never stops short of reminding us of her days as a supermodel with her choice of fashion statements.

Even as she graces the cover of Women’s Health India July/August 2012 gone is her usual high-octane style replaced with a more resort/beach carefree look in line with ‘Cocktail’ tentatively scheduled to hit theatres on July 13th. Yes, Ms. Padukone is in full ‘Cocktail’ promo mode and (while it may be asking for too much) I hope she lands the upcoming covers of L’Officiel and Hi! Blitz magazines just for the sake of glamour. 馃檪

Lackluster Lakme Fashion Week Had Us Missing Deepika Padukone

Lackluster Lakme Fashion Week [Summer/Resort 2011] had us missing the cat-walking days of Deepika Padukone, supermodel extraordinaire.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As the Summer/Resort 2011 Fashion in Mumbai, India draws to a close, 聽most fashion blogging mavens worth their salt find themselves scratching their heads and wondering when it all began in the first place? With most of the displayed collections leaving us with more of a feeling of “blah” rather than “oh-lah-lah” it’s small wonder that this fashion week came and went faster than that ‘Drive Angry 3D’ flick at the Box Office. Perhaps it was the absence of A-list show-stoppers聽we have become accustomed to gawking at on the runway or maybe the models just failed to bring that extra oomph to the collections. Sure you had your A-list guests like Kareena Kapoor at Manish Malhotra and Juhi Chawla and Urmila Matondkar at Anita Dongre’s show but still something was missing.聽Maybe it’s time for the next Anushka Sharma, Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone. Yes, before they were famous actresses, they all did time as runway models and always brought the house down at every show they did. 聽Maybe we need that “It” model to get us all excited about Lakme Fashion Week again, that one model we’ll all be talking about even after the trends, the glitz and the glamour. A tradition聽that certainly was missing from this season’s catwalk.
