Best Looks from the Red Carpet + Backstage at the 2012 BET Awards in Los Angeles

Beyonce + Nicki Minaj

Mariah + Monica + Cissy Houston + LaLa

Eva Pigford + Selita Ebanks + Toccara Jones

Lola Munroe + Angela Bassett + Kerry Washington

From what I saw, the afore-mentioned celebrities were the only ones who represented for fashion at the 2012 BET Awards, which took place in Los Angeles last evening. The men had it easy (don’t they always?) All they had to do was show up in jeans and a t-shirt or a suit. The women? Hmm! Boy, did they try to make all kinds of fashion statements in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colours and lengths all night long, with performers changing into as many as two or three outfits through the course of the night. For the most part they were okay fashion statements. Kerry Washington, who is one of my favourite fashionistas played it too safe in a beige bustier and black pencil skirt. I was pleasantly surprised by Toccara Jones who looked pretty stylish in print, Selita Ebanks knocked it out of the ballpark in a semi-see-through floor length Falguni & Shane Peacock (she’s definitely becoming a fashion favourite), Beyonce shined in a thigh-high slit sleek yellow dress paired with a statement silver belt, Kim Kardashian and Eva Pigford also impressed in sizzling white numbers. Angela Bassett kept in classy in an appropriately short lacy lbd paired with peep-toe pumps and her stylishly signature pixie haircut. I really loved Lola Munroe’s one-shouldered fitted gown by Gerardo Reyes but couldn’t understand the necklace on her head which threatened to unbalance her nearly perfect look.

It seemed the official colour of the night or at least the award show ceremony was RED which is why we’ve created a special category for actresses dressed in the colour to make the best dressed selection process a little easier.   ~Fashionwidget

FASHIONWIDGET’S Best and Worst Looks from the 2011 BET Awards in Los Angeles

BEST DRESSED STARS

FYI: Hovering your cursor over each pic will reveal the name of the photographed personality and further commentary.

Ms good-two-shoes (no pun intended) Patti Labelle won the 2011 lifetime achievement award, schooled ’em on how it’s done with class in the singing department and still managed to look like the belle of the ball. Teach us, Ms. Patti,  teach us!!!

^Marsha narrowly made it onto the best dressed list. I appreciate the fact that she lost a lot of weight and looks fantastic but I wish this sequined maxi dress of hers were two to three inches longer, either that or she needed to have adjusted it by pulling it down or something. + Those shoes are a wrong fit and wrong for this outfit but other than that she looked great.

AND THE BAD FASHION IDEAS ON THE BLACK CARPET…

This Herve Leger frock did Mary wrong and vice versa.

Herve Leger did nothing for Nene either. It’s called the ‘body-con’ look for a reason.

Prom Season is still on? Come on people it’s almost July. You should have all graduated by now.

Yeah lady, you shouldn’t have…

It’s the BET awards Rocsi, not carnival de Rio.

Ashanti almost got it right but the fabric is questionable and it is revealing things that would mar even the best of Parisian Couture.

Ms. CeCe Peniston how can we respect you when you dress like this?

Why bring all your gadgets along with you on the green carpet? Leave that stuff in the car, alarm it and be done with it. + Ladies, don’t wear all your gold jewellery pieces all at once, you’ll look freaky.

Why?

Why?

Best Dressed At the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala 2011

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

WHO: Global Celebrities and Fashion Designers

WHAT: Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala 2011 (Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Exhibit)

WHEN: MAY 2nd 2011

WHERE: NYC, USA

Fashionwidget’s Verdict: This event is arguably the The “Oscars” of the Fashion World. While we are still deliberating (lots of dresses and suits to review) and while most of us are currently working on other projects simultaneously, we’ve managed to shortlist some of the best dressed celebrities from last evening’s costume gala in New York  for you our lovely and *wink*wink* very patient readers. Overall it was  a great night, some outfits were drop-dead gorgeous while some we refuse to even upload pics of, talk less of comment on. If you have nothing nice to say, it is better not to say anything at all right? As  for the celebrities shortlisted in the slideshow above, they deserve a round of applause for bringing in on the red carpet last night. A+
